Another thing I've found irritating about this is the right's reveling in the attitude of contempt for anyone in the outgroup. Yes, you're supposed to put on your own oxygen mask before turning to help others with theirs. That doesn't mean you just put yours on and then start laughing at those who are having difficulty with it. The *TND* kind of stuff is really ghoulish
That's an interesting observation. This essay reminded me of Scott Alexander's great “I Can Tolerate Anything Except the Outgroup” essay which if you haven't read you should read right away.
For at least the last 20 years I've thought the left was much more vicious in attacking their outgroup. The concept of cancel culture on social media didn't emerge from the right. There does seem to be an increased amount of reveling on the right, but until I see a left wing James Damore situation I'm hesitant to say the right has reached parity.
Indeed, that essay expressed things I had been struggling to understand for years. I count it as probably the single most influential piece of cultural writing I’ve ever read.
In recent years I’ve noticed Scott’s public statements have been straying farther from the principles he espouses in this essay, and it’s distressing. He either has major blind spots to conservative thought, or he pretends to have them for the benefit of his audience.
Nice essay. Although I will probably at least mostly agree with you on the future left vs right ability to model out group values, the steak vs avocado meme is one of the better counter examples I've seen in the wild.
I think it persists because it’s “directionally correct” as the right is so fond of saying. It does reveal something important, you just can’t take it literally as so many of our spergs insist on doing.
